The crucial steps and parameters in the recipes are presented, and the instructions and information (or lack of it) found in these treatises are rationalised by breaking down each process and investigating the role of each variable. A total of 14 recipes was taken from: Ibn Bādīs (an Arabic manuscript from c.1025), Mappae clavicula (9th–12th century), O libro de komo se fazen as kores (LKFK, a Portuguese treatise from the 15th century), Jehan le Begue (1431), the Bolognese manuscript (15th century), the Strasbourg manuscript (15th century), the Montpellier manuscript (15th century) and the Paduan manuscript (late 16th to 17th century). In this study, we interpreted several documentary sources as practical treatises describing the production of lac dye paints. In the Romanesque period, lac was used to produce carmine, dark reds, pinks and/or brownish paints inilluminated manuscripts from three important Portuguese medieval monasteries (Lorvão, Alcobaça and Santa Cruz). Recognizing these biases could alert scientists, artists,Īnd others to more effectively communicate messages of universal importance. Artists favored Hymenoptera (62%) over potentially more species-rich orders. Forty-seven percent of the artists addressed habitat destruction or climate change, but some other categories were severely underrepresented, withĪlmost no work explicitly addressing overpopulation or overharvesting. After adding insect-specific categories of (6) decline of insect pollinators and (7) the intentional modification or extermination of insects, we categorized our surveyed works, confirming categorizations with 53 of the living artists. Categories often cited as contributing to speciesĮxtinction are (1) habitat destruction, (2) invasive species, (3) pollution, (4) human population, and (5) overharvesting. We surveyed work by 73 artists featuring insects or insect bodily products to gauge how extensively artists are addressing anthropogenic environmental distress, and what insects they are choosing as subjects in the process. Artists often use insects in their works because of our intimate and varied relationship with this diverse, abundant lineage of animals. A multifaceted approach to communicating human-induced environmentalĭestruction is critical, and art can affect our behavior by its power to evoke emotions. Evidence and awareness of our environmental impact has failed to elicit meaningful change in reversing our behavior. Humans are reshaping the planet in impressive, and impressively self-destructive, ways. The history, value, and ethics of insect media art are relevant topics at a time when the natural world is at unprecedented risk. This review surveys insects and their products used as media in the visual arts and considers the untapped potential for artistic exploration of media derived from insects. Insects themselves can serve as art media, and artists have explored or exploited insects for their products (silk, wax, honey, propolis, carmine, shellac, nest material), body parts (e.g., wings), and whole bodies (dead, alive, individually, or as collectives). This is because artists can depict insects overtly, but they can also allude to insects conceptually or use insect products in a purely utilitarian manner. Our relationship with insects has been on display throughout the history of art, sometimes explicitly but frequently in inconspicuous ways.
